5 Effects of Bariatric Surgery On Cardiovascular Health
Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, can have a positive impact on cardiovascular health

Bariatric surgery, a medical intervention for severe obesity, has demonstrated profound impacts on cardiovascular health. Beyond its primary goal of weight loss, this surgical approach has been linked to significant improvements in cardiovascular risk factors. Studies indicate reductions in hypertension, dyslipidemia, and insulin resistance post-surgery, contributing to a lower incidence of cardiovascular events. The mechanisms involve not only weight reduction but also favorable alterations in adipose tissue, inflammation, and metabolic regulation. Understanding the cardiovascular benefits of bariatric surgery underscores its potential as a comprehensive therapeutic strategy, addressing both obesity and associated cardiovascular comorbidities.

5 Effects of Bariatric surgery on cardiovascular health

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight loss surgery, can have a positive impact on cardiovascular health. Dr Ankit Potdar, Consultant – General Surgery, SRV Hospitals, Goregaon explains the effects of bariatric surgery on cardiovascular health:

  1. Weight lossBariatric surgery leads to significant and sustained weight loss by restricting food intake or causing malabsorption. This weight reduction can help decrease several risk factors for cardiovascular disease, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol levels, and insulin resistance.
  2. Improved lipid profileBariatric surgery has been shown to improve lipid profiles by reducing total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol (the “bad” cholesterol), and triglyceride levels. This improvement can lower the risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and strokes.
  3. Blood pressure controlIt can lead to a reduction in blood pressure, allowing better control of hypertension. Lower blood pressure decreases the strain on the heart and blood vessels, reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
  4. Decreased inflammationThe surgery also has been associated with a reduction in inflammatory markers, such as C-reactive protein (CRP), which are linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Decreased inflammation contributes to a healthier cardiovascular system.
  5. Improved glycemic controlBariatric surgery is particularly effective in improving glycemic control in individuals with obesity and type 2 diabetes. Better management of diabetes reduces the risk of developing cardiovascular disease in these patients.
