New Delhi: A key member of the Bachchan family has finally spoken up on the love-hate relationship between the Bachchans and the Congress party, who were almost inseparable from each other at one point of time.
Addressing an election rally for Samajwadi Party in Ballia, Bollywood actress and Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan claimed on Saturday that Bachchans never snapped ties with the Congress, rather it was the grand old party which ditched them at their hour of need.
"There was no one standing by us," Jaya said. "Bachchan pariwar khud he Congress se alag nahin hua tha balki alag kar diya gaya tha (The Bachchans did not break up with the Congress, but they were sidelined)," she claimed.
"In our times of crisis, there was only Amar Singh standing by us," Jaya Bachchan said. It is because of this that her family decided to support the SP, she said trying to strike an emotional chord with the audience.
The SP MP said the SP leaders did not just make promises to them, but also kept them. "This quality of theirs has helped Amitabhji form a long association with them," she said dropping Big B's name for good effect.
Party MP and actress Jaya Prada also addressed the gathering.
Addressing the same rally, SP General Secretary Amar Singh said he expected the BSP to again forge a post-poll alliance with the BJP. He scoffed at BSP chief Mayawati's statement about sending him and Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav to jail on coming to power, saying they were not afraid.
The two were addressing a meeting to garner support for Uttar Pradesh Revenue Minister Ambika Chaudhary. Amar Singh claimed that "wrong policies" pursued in Congress-ruled states had strengthened the BJP and rejected various surveys and exit polls predicting major gains for the BSP.
