Harmanpreet Kaur is set to extend her association with Sydney Thunder for the fourth season of Women’s Big Bash League, while Smriti Mandhana has been signed up by Hobart Hurricanes, the BCCI confirmed on Tuesday (November 27).
Harmanpreet, India Women’s Twenty20 captain, has been with Thunder for the last two seasons and was the first woman from the country to sign up for an overseas franchise. She was the team’s top scorer in the second season when she tallied 296 runs in 12 innings at an average of 59.20, and was named Thunder’s Player of the Tournament. She managed only 107 runs from seven innings in the following season.
Smriti Mandhana, the vice-captain of India’s T20 side, had earlier played for Brisbane Heat in the second season of the WBBL. She had an average outing for the Heats, but was on fire for the Western Storms in the Women’s Cricket Super League in England earlier this year smashing 387 runs in seven innings at an average of 77.40 and strike-rate of 185.16.
“I’ve heard from many players that the Hurricanes group is a great squad to be around and I can’t wait to get to Tasmania for the matches,” she said.
Salliann Briggs, Hurricanes’ coach, said he was delighted with Mandhana’s entry.
“Mandhana is a proven performer on the world stage, we saw that just last week with her knock against the Aussies (in the World T20),” she said. “I can’t wait to see her in purple, she’s an exciting addition not only for us but for the whole competition.”
