Uttarakhand Assembly Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal on Thursday said he was in favour of a grassroot leader as the Chief Minister if Congress central leadership goes for a change of guard in the state.

Kunjwal is considered close to Union Minister Harish Rawat, who was a strong contender for the chief minister's post when Congress got a majority in the state. Though shying away from commenting on the issue terming it as the prerogative of the party's central leadership, Kunjwal said if at all there is a change of leadership in the state, someone from the grassroots with a fair understanding of the people's problems and the state's geographical and social circumstances should be made Chief Minister.

"Appointment of a grassroot leader with an understanding of the state's problems as chief minister will lead to more development activities in the state. It will also lead to a change in the work culture," Kunjwal told reporters without taking any name.

Rawat is one of the top contenders for the post of chief minister in Uttarakhand which has been abuzz with speculation about a change of guard for about two months now. However, there has been no official confirmation about the possibility of Vijay Bahuguna's replacement as CM. So far there has been no indication to this effect from the party high command, top PCC sources here said.
