New Delhi: Several Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) civil services aspirants protesting against the alleged language bias in the CSAT paper were detained by Delhi Police on Friday when they were marching towards Parliament. The aspirants were detained from near Rail Bhawan in central Delhi and taken to the Parliament Street police station.
As a precautionary step to prevent massive protests in Lutyen's Delhi, authorities have also shut down the Central Secretariat and Udyog Bhawan metro station, the closest one to Parliament.
Meanwhile, MoS for Personnel, Jitender Singh clarified the Centre's stand in the Rajya Sabha after several MPs raised the issue and accused the UPSC of being biased against aspirants from Hindi and other regional languages background.
"Changes were made in the UPSC paper in 2010. Why were there no protests then," he asked. The Upper House witnessed repeated adjournments over the issue.
Singh also said that the three-member committee formed to look into the matter has been asked to submit its report in a week's time. He assured that the issuance of admit cards for 2014 UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination will not affect the government's decision.
Intense protests are being witnessed across the country especially north India against the alleged language bias against Hindi. Agitated protestors torched allegedly vehicles in North Delhi in protest on Thursday and 20 of them were detained by the police.
