Uttar Pradesh: Samajwadi Party leader Amar Singh, who is facing a threat of disqualification from the Rajya Sabha, has told the Election Commission that the post of Chairman of Uttar Pradesh Development Council (UPDC) was not an office of profit.
In a reply to the Election Commission's notice, Amar Singh said that the UPDC was registered under the Societes Act and was not a government body.
He has further added that the EC had "misinterpreted" Jaya Bachchan's case too, which had resulted in her disqualification of the Rajya Sabha membership on the grounds that her chairpersonship of the UP Film Development Council was an office of profit.
The SP leader would be sending a detailed reply later.
On March 10, the Election Commission had issued a notice to Amar Singh on a petition seeking his disqualification from the Rajya Sabha on the grounds that he held an office of profit and asked him to file a reply by March 31.
