The system has proven effective, collecting fines totalling Rs 8.99 crore in just one month.

Motorists should be aware that any traffic violations committed on the Mysuru-Bengaluru National Highway 275 will now trigger an immediate alert to their mobile phones. This is enabled by an AI-equipped camera that identifies the vehicle owner by the licence plate number upon violation. Subsequently, a notification will be sent to the violator’s residence. The system has proven effective, collecting fines totalling Rs 8.99 crore in just one month. During this period, from June 1 to 30, a total of 161,491 infractions were recorded. The majority of these were for not wearing seat belts, as captured by the ITMS camera.

Other violations included 12,609 general traffic breaches, 1,087 instances of triple riding, 9,079 cases of riding without a helmet, 7,671 speeding cases, 7 instances of driving against traffic, and 577 no-entry violations.

This system also records the exact location, date, and time of the offence, which are sent to the registered mobile number associated with the vehicle. Along its 119 km stretch, the Mysuru Bengaluru National Highway 275 is monitored by 60 surveillance cameras.

In other news, Asian Paints Limited, India’s largest paint company, has announced an investment of approximately Rs 1,305 crore from internal accruals to expand the capacity of its Mysuru facility. This decision follows the approval from the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board. The expansion will double the plant’s capacity from 3 lakh KL to 6 lakh KL annually, addressing the company’s medium-term capacity needs.

In January, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) floated a tender worth Rs 688 crore for “additional works to ensure road safety on the Bengaluru-Mysuru controlled access highway”.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the highway on March 12, 2023, just ahead of the Karnataka assembly elections. The expressway has drawn the ire of commuters for lack of safety measures and an increase in fatal accidents. Parts of the expressway have been flooded.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah had inspected the expressway in July 2023 and said the road was opened to traffic in a hurry without completing all the works, including road safety measures. The state government had written to the NHAI to fix the problems on the expressway.
