SIVAGANGA: Burglars struck a jewellery store near Ilayankudi in Sivaganga and decamped with gold jewels weighing 6.5 kg and Rs 3.5 lakh in cash.Police said that Suresh, who runs Rasi Jewellery on Salaigramam Main Road, with his brothers, Rajkumar and Ramesh, locked the shop at 9.30 pm on Friday and returned home.Later in the night some unidentified persons entered the shop and escaped with the gold and cash.The burglary came to light on Saturday morning after the owner of a nearby shop informed Suresh that the locks of his shop have been broken and glass pieces were found on the floor near the shop.Suresh, immediately informed the Salaigramam police about the incident.As many as eight locks on the shutter and the gate of the shop were broken. The jewels kept in the showcase were missing.During police enquiry it was found out that the shop did not have alarm system and closed circuit television (CCTV).DSP Stalin said that the total worth of valuables could be estimated only after scrutinising the documents.The burglars also tried to target a few other shops in the vicinity including another jewellery store and a TASMAC shop. However they aborted their attempt as they could not break the locks, the police said.75 sovereigns stolen Jewels weighing 75 sovereigns and Rs 75,000 in cash were looted from a house in Aruppukotai here on Saturday.Police said that Velayudham (45) a thread trader of Aruppukottai, had gone to a temple with his family on Friday night. When he returned the next morning, he found the lock on the front door of the house broken.Velayudham also found that the bureau had been broken open using a crowbar and jewels weighing 75 sovereigns were missing. The burglars locked the main door of the house from inside and escaped through the door leading to the terrace.
