Suspected dengue death creates panic

A ‘suspected dengue’ death created panic among the residents of Bangalore East on Saturday following a goof up from a hospital which gave a false report of dengue death to a patient who died of viral fever.

Hours after the news broke, BBMP demanded explanation from the Ambedkar Medical College for spreading this canard through a death certificate of a patient. According to the report, the patient died due to ‘Dengue Shock Syndrome’. However, the lab report issued by Medical Superintendent states that the dengue report was negative. Express is in possession of these documents.

Meanwhile, tension prevailed at Rashad Nagar (in Bangalore East) following the death of 20-year-old Aftab Alam who was admitted to the hospital on July 23 for viral fever and he succumbed to the fever on Saturday.

The duty doctor, upon the request from the family members, issued the death certificate and gave them his body for cremation early. But in a hurry, he goofed it up and mentioned that the death was due to ‘Dengue Shock Syndrome’.

His family and neighbours panicked after seeing the document. It also sent the officials of the BBMP and the Health Department into a tizzy.

“We have given standing instructions to all hospitals not to spread any information which causes fear and panic. This incident has come to light at a time when the city is already reeling under the fear of dengue fever. We have asked our District Health Officer of the BBMP East to take action and submit a report,” Said C Manjula, Chief Health Officer of the BBMP.

Meanwhile, it is learnt that the patient’s blood sampleshas been sent to NIMHANS for further examination.
