BELGAUM : It was a heart-warming incident when several organisations and social workers came forward to help a meritorious student-Jyoti Hattikatti, who earlier attempted suicide for being unable to pursue engineering studies due to poverty. Jyoti hails from Vadgaon in Belgaum. Her father Nagappa Hattikatti runs a tea stall on a pushcart near Shahapur Police Station. Jyoti recently completed her PU-II scoring 94 per cent. Dreaming to become an engineer joining Basaveshwar Engineering College in Bagalkot, she attended the Common Entrance Test and achieved a good rank. But before she could attend the counselling on July 9, her father told her that he would not be able to afford the expenses of her higher studies. This forced Jyoti to attempt suicide by consuming phenol. However, her parents immediately rushed her to the district hospital and doctors succeeded to save her. Not only her parents and relatives, but even the police, doctors, nurses and other tried to console her.Moved by Jyoti’s story, several organisations and social workers rushed forward to help her. The local branch of State Bank of India handed over an educational loan approval letter of Rs 4 lakh to her on Tuesday. Social worker Baban Bhobe, who is physically challenged, approached Jyoti, assuring her to look after her books and stationery expenses. Even engineering colleges at Nipani and Sankeshwar have come forward saying that they would provide free education to Jyoti.
