Srinagar: An Indian Army soldier committed suicide in a bunker in Jammu and Kashmir on Tuesday, officials said.

Defence spokesman Lt Col A K Mathur identified the slain soldier as Sauran Singh of Dogra Regiment who was manning a light machine gun (LMG) post at the heavily fortified Badami Bagh headquarters of the army's 15 Corps in summer capital Srinagar.

Singh, who was alone in the LMG post, shot himself Tuesday morning using his automatic service rifle, the spokesman said.

"He died on the spot. An enquiry has been ordered to ascertain the reasons behind his action," he added.

Dozens of incidents of fratricidal killings and suicides by security personnel have come to light in recent times and defence authorities have rushed psychiatric help to the field units to tackle the problem.

Security officers attribute this to the stress while performing duties in the hostile environs and often dangerous situation.

Long separation from families and lack of recreational facilities are also cited as reasons for this phenomenon among security forces.
