Senior Supreme Court Lawyer Fali S Nariman Passes Away At 95

Renowned jurist and senior Supreme Court lawyer Fali S Nariman, aged 95, passed away on Wednesday. The legal doyen was suffering from multiple ailments, including cardiac issues.

Nariman has been a part of several historic cases, including the famous NJAC verdict. He has also been a part of the SC AoR Association case, which resulted in the collegium system, TMA Pai case, among others, LiveLaw said.

Nariman, who served as the Additional Solicitor General of India, resigned from his posted in June 1975 to mark his opposition against the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s government to declare emergency.

The eminent jurist received the honour of Padma Bhushan in January 1991 and Padma Vibhushan in 2007.

The lawyer, also an author, has penned down books such as “The State of Nation,” “God Save the Hon’ble Supreme Court” and his widely read autobiography, “Before Memory Fades”.

Nariman’s son, Rohinton Nariman, was a senior advocate and a judge of the Supreme Court. He also served as a member of the Bar Council of India.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his grief over Nariman’s death and said, “Shri Fali Nariman Ji was among the most outstanding legal minds and intellectuals. He devoted his life to making justice accessible to common citizens. I am pained by his passing away. My thoughts are with his family and admirers. May his soul rest in peace.”

Condoling his death, Congress leader and senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi took to X and said that the passing of Fali S Nariman is the “end of an era”.

“End of an era—#falinariman passes away, a living legend who will forever be in hearts &minds of those in law &public life. Above all his diverse achievements, he stuck to his principles unwaveringly &called a spade a spade, a quality shared by his brilliant son #Rohinton,” Singhvi wrote.
