THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: With the resignation of CPM MLA R Selvaraj under mysterious circumstances, allegations of high-level conspiracy and horse trading are doing the rounds in the political circle. The people are still in disbelief as he won the Neyyattinkara seat in a fiercely-contested election just nine months ago.It is not only the political dimension involved in the act but also the fact that an MLA from the CPM could ditch the party, when it is engaged in a fierce electoral battle at Piravom, points to the unbelievable decline in the quality of politics at present, according to political observers. The fact that not a single leader of his party had any inkling of  Selvaraj’s decision to resign had become a rude shock to his party colleagues. CPM state committee member and former minister M Vijayakumar could not hide his shock while talking to Express.“This kind of politics  is totally unfamiliar to our state. What is more shocking is the fact that a high-level conspiracy had taken place at the behest of the Chief Minister. This will leave a deep impact on our politics in the days to come,” he said.CPI for Left UnityResponding to the unsavoury developments CPI state secretary C K Chandrappan said that the politics of horse trading would adversely affect the interest of the state. “It will affect the political stability and development of the state,” he said.   Speaking to Express over phone from North Parur, he said that it was during the era of Travancore and Thiru-Kochi states that we witnessed  ugly politics of defection. But that kind of politics had come to an end in the state for nearly three decades.Chandrappan said that the corporate forces were behind promoting politics of defection. While the Left parties parted ways with the first UPA Government, Mukesh Ambani came to New Delhi and violating all protocols he was received by the PMO and with in half-an-hour he had a meeting with the Prime Minister. What followed was over 20 MPs defecting in favour of the Manmohn Singh Government, he said.Chandrappan said that he was for more unity among Left parties in the Piravom by-election and try to convince the people about the conspiracy hatched at the behest of Oommen Chandy.Asked whether the evolution of identity politics had played a role in the new development he said that those who had left the LDF in the name of identity politics were taking an opportunistic stand. But in Selvaraj’s case, he could not have claimed any such lame excuses as the community to which he belonged to had incurred no loss due to his staying with the party for over three decades. “In his case, his party had accommodated him in an out-of-the-way manner. He has no reason to ditch his party in this style at this juncture,” Chandrappan said.
