Sania faces first round exit in women's singles
The Indian tennis player was Knocked out by France's Virginie Razzano 6-7, 6-2, 3-6.

New Delhi: India's Sania Mirza on Tuesday was knocked out of the women's singles event at the Wimbledon going down in her first round match against France's Virginie Razzano 6-7, 6-2, 3-6.

It was Sania's 31 unforced errors that cost her the match. She, in fact, raced to a 3-0 lead before the Frenchwoman caught up with her, subsequently taking the first set to the tie-breaker. Razzano won the tie-breaker 7-4 to win the first set 7-6.

Mirza, fresh from her appearance at the French Open women's doubles final, was in no mood to let go of the advantage. She made it a set each with a 6-2 demolition in the second set. But couldn't hold on to the momentum, going down 3-6 in the third set.

This was Sania's third exit in the first round in seven appearances at the Wimbledon while she had progressed upto the second round on four occasions. She had lost in the first round last year also.

Sania will now hope to put on a winning show in the women's doubles event with Elena Vesnina of Russia. Seeded fourth, the Indo-Russian pair will take on the duo of Anna Chakvetadze of Russia and Melanie Oudin of United States in the first round.

India's Somdev Devvarman will play his first round game later on Tuesday.
