Rituals begin to purify hill shrine after Kannada actor's claim that she entered temple and touched bachelor deity.

New Delhi: The Sabarimala temple in Kerala is being cleansed after Kannada actor Jayamala’s claim that she once entered the sanctum sanctorum of the temple and touched the idol of Lord Ayyappa.

The purification ritual began with special prayers and offerings at the Sree Krishna Temple in Guruvayoor on Thursday.

Women aged 10-50 must not enter the Sabarimala temple, as Lord Ayyappa is a celibate.

Cleaning touch

The president and members of Travancore Devaswom Board, the custodians of the Sabarimala temple, made offerings on behalf of Lord Ayyappa, President as part of the cleansing rituals.

Palpayasam, rice cooked with jaggery, and milk were offered to the deity. Similar Parihara Kriyas or rituals will be held in 50 temples in Kerala in two years.

The Board started the purification ceremony after an astrologer’s report that a woman had entered the shrine and defiled the premises.

The purification ceremony, called parihara kriyas, will be held in 50 temples across Kerala and would be completed within two years.
