A spy of Pakistan intelligence agency ISI, tasked with targeting Indian Air Force and military installations in Bareilly, was arrested last week in Meerut in Uttar Pradesh.
According to details, accessed exclusively by CNN-IBN, ISI spy, identified as Mohd Kalam alias Mohd Ejaz, was arrested by Uttar Pradesh Police last week.
Trained in communication codes and military formation signs, Kalam was tasked by the ISI to target military and Air Force installations in Bareilly.
Details accessed by CNN-IBN suggest that Kalam entered had India by road through Dhaka. In the process, he was helped by Pakistan High Commission in Bangladesh.
Following his arrival in India, Kalam worked as a photographer in a studio in Bareilly while carrying on spying activities.
He had acquired full Indian identity, including Aadhar card, voter identification card, bank account and education certificate. He got a bank account in Central Bank of India and even received money worth Rs 17000 through Western Union Money Transfer.
Kalam, who hailed from a poor family in Islamabad, has good photography skills, which was utilised by the ISI for spying. He was tasked to set up a base in Bareilly, befriend lower level defence officials and track movements of Army and Indian Air Force.
The salary given to him was Rs 10,000 while his family got Rs 30,000 in Islamabad.
Kalam is a living example of the ISI's penetration into India. Despite being a Pakistani national, Kalam had acquired a complete Indian identity with documents to prove his fake nationality in the course of three years, all thanks to a well oiled Pakistan intelligence network, tasked to wage a covert spy war against India. But who is this man and how intricate is the ISI web in India?
In 2012, an ISI agent, Subhani Sheikh, lured him into spying for Pakistan, even promising him to get his sister married. Following this, Kalam was trained in Indian military ranks, formation signs, communication codes, surveillance and anti-surveillance.
He was also imparted rigorous training in Hindi and Indian culture, including knowledge of Hindu gods and goddesses.
On February 1, 2013, Kalam travelled to Dhaka on a fake Pakistani passport with $700 in cash with him. With local ISI assistance, he travelled by road, reaching Kolkata on February 9, 2013.
Sources in the security establishment say that the role of the Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka has come under the scanner for providing logistical support in helping Kalam enter India.
