Quota will hurt India's reputation: BJP
New reservation is part of government's "great reservation appeasement stunt," says party vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

New Delhi: The BJP on Saturday said providing 27 per cent reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBC) in Central government education institutions would discourage merit and damage India's reputation as a talent hub.

"India has world-class merit, especially in science and technology, but the UPA's reservation proposals, which are nothing but manifestation of the Congress-led government's great appeasement policy, will just damage India's reputation as a talent hub and discourage merit," said BJP vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi.

The BJP had on Friday said it would support the reservation provided it was implemented minority education institutes too.

Naqvi accused the Centre of vote politics and said he had written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh regarding HRD Minister Arjun Singh's reservation proposals.

Naqvi described the new proposals as a "gimmick" and said he believed more reservations in educational institutions would only benefit the elite. In his letter, Naqvi has admitted that most parties would not openly oppose this "great reservation appeasement stunt."

Naqvi said the Centre’s appeasement policies, like religion-based reservations in the Aligarh Muslim University and a proposed headcount of Muslim in armed forces, have not benefited communities for which they were intended.

"Can your government explain to the nation how much benefit communities, for which such reservations have been announced in the past two years, have derived from such actions?" Naqvi said in his letter.

What's your reaction?
