New Delhi: For the first time in 20 years, a pro-LTTE group of Tamil MPs was able to meet an Indian Prime Minister in Delhi on Friday.

The meeting between the leader of the Tamil National Alliance, R Sambandham and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, was reportedly facilitated by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi.

Controversial issues such as the LTTE's hand in Rajiv Gandhi's assassination were carefully avoided. The MPs were satisfied with the meeting, describing it as crucial.

"The only country which can really play important role to solve the problem in Lanka is India. The Prime Minister has reiterated India's commitment to the need for political solution that will give the Tamil people political space in the country," said Sambandham.

Meanwhile in Chennai, External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee rejected the concept of Tamil Eelam advocated by LTTE. However, he said the legitimate rights of the Tamil people had to be protected.

"As far as we are concerned, we have no intention of directly intervening in Sri Lanka's matter, " he said.
