Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has summoned Joint Commissioner of Police (Central) SK Gautam, who is heading the investigation into the alleged thrashing of a group of students by some police personnel, and sought an explanation from him. The L-G summoned the JCP a day after a video of Delhi Police personnel assaulting a group of protesting students went viral and led to a huge uproar.
The Jawaharlal Nehru Students Union and some other groups are protesting at the Delhi Police Headquarters against the alleged police excesses. Prohibitory orders under Section 144 was imposed soon after the protest turned violent. Police officials warned the students not to break the law.
Delhi Police Commissioner BS Bassi has already promised action against erring officials if the allegations of brutality are proved.
To counter the allegations Delhi Police released a video in which some girl students are seen heckling and abusing the police personnel. In the video some women constables were clearly though protesting students claimed there weren't any.
The first video shows Delhi Police personnel and a few others in civil dresses ruthlessly beating up some students. The students targeted in the video were reportedly protesting against the death of Hyderabad University Dalit PhD scholar Rohith Vemula. The protest was held outside the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh office in Delhi.
As the video begins, the students are seen and heard raising slogans of "Delhi Police murdabad", but it's followed by a sudden aggression from Delhi Police, who end up beating the students mercilessly, even as they hit at the camera shooting the same.
Criticising the attack on students, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal tweeted that BJP and the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh had been using Delhi Police as their private army. "Delhi Police being used by BJP/RSS as their private army to terrorise and teach lesson to anyone opposing BJP/RSS. I strongly condemn attack on students."
