BHUBANESWAR: The soaring prices of vegetables, particularly potato, has brought back last year’s memory when these essential items of everyday use not only became scarce but also went beyond the reach of common man. Potato is now selling at ` 14 per kg in the Capital. Warning that people will not tolerate the soaring prices of vegetables, the OPCC has asked the State Government to take remedial measures before things go out of control. OPCC general secretary Arya Kumar Gyanendra demanded that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik intervened and controlled the situation. He demanded that steps be taken by the Government to ensure that people get potato at reasonable prices. Gyanendra said the rise in potato price at this time just after the harvesting season is unusual and has taken place because of the inefficiency of the Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department. When potato price is ` 6/7 per kg every where in the country, in Odisha is has touched ` 14. He warned that the price of the ubiquitous item will skyrocket further in the coming days if steps are not taken immediately. Criticising the Chief Minister for always trying to shift the blame to the Centre, Gyanendra asked what is the role of the Centre in rise of potato price. The State Government should immediately bring the prices of vegetables under control without trying to hoodwink the people again by blaming the Centre, he said.
