Dear Sunny Paaji,
It was just last month that I watched cult classic 'Gadar- Ek Prem Katha' for the 50th time. I know it might sound a bit exaggerated to those who aren't aware of the power you infuse in your onscreen persona, but do I care? Not really. For I believe if there is any actor who is worthy of the title 'superstar', you would be it. From cult classics to huge blockbusters, Sunny, you have got it all and your humility, calm exterior and courtesy only helps you expand your fan base by the day.
So yeah, for me you'll be the best Bollywood actor of all time. Even as I continue to appreciate you for a certain style that stands out, I was a little saddened by 'Singh Saab The Great'. Agreed, the way you exploded on 70 mm, took on the goons and performed those death-defying stunts with perfection was impressive, but I felt your role was so repetitive. Your role to combat contemporary social problems in your films may have proved to be a huge draw among your loyal supporters, but did it bring out any versatility in you? Whether it was your turbaned avatar or the strength with which you yanked out a banyan tree's root in 'Singh Saab The Great', for me, it was a replay of what you have done in your past films.
Since we are convinced of the fact that you have the genuine talent when it comes to taking up versatile roles, why not shock your fans with an avatar they haven't seen you don ever? Yeah, my idea is to divert your attention from avenging roles you are so good at, and take up a suspense thriller which keeps your fan on their edge of their seats!
Why is it that your contemporaries are experimenting with their looks and on-screen personas and you, a powerhouse in the acting domain, want to stick to what you are comfortable at? There must be a reason why movie buffs wouldn't ever think of you in films like 'The Lunchbox', 'Three Idiots', 'Pan Singh Tomar' and 'Barfi!' They are all great films, and had an influence on Bollywood. While each of these films have been referred to as rare masterpieces for generations, the lead actors have also been lauded for their performances.
So Sunny even though I will always respect you for the roles that established you as an explosive action star in Bollywood, and powerful dialogues like 'Yeh dhai kilo ka haath jab kisi pe padta hai na, toh aadmi uth-ta nahin, uth jaata hai', 'No if, no but, sirf jatt!' and 'Tareekh pe tareekh, tareekh pe tareekh' which only you can pull off convincingly, I also want you to see do something that doesn't remind me of what you had done in the past.
Sunny, your personality is such that it can allow you to do just about everything - playing an insane pirate, an assassin, superhero fighting aliens - and still earn huge plaudits.
And how about playing an anti-hero? Haven't popular stars Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Ranveer Singh banked on the villainous tendencies of their characters to make it big?
So what's stopping you, Sunny?
Best Wishes.
