MYSORE: Two wild elephants stunned early morning joggers in Mysore as they stormed into the city in the wee hours of Wednesday and went on a rampage trampling one person to death and injuring four, apart from damaging more than 10 vehicles.
The rampaging jumbos kept the police, forest officials and media on their toes for more than six hours.The deceased has been identified as Renukaswamy (55), an ATM watchman on Narayana Shastri Road and a resident of Bamboo Bazar. The injured are Roslin, Siddamma, Pawan and others, who were taken to hospital.
Police Commissioner Sunil Agarwal, DCP Basavaraj Malagatti, conservator B J Hosmath and chief conservator Ajay Mishra rushed to the spot with additional forces. Police blocked roads and police vehicles alerted people about the wild elephants and appealed to them to stay behind closed doors.The elephants entered the city from Malavalli and Bannur and were sighted in Bannimantap by joggers at 6 am. The male elephant attacked Roslin (55) and damaged vehicles before it reached the Indian Medical Association building and Ayurveda Hospital circle and Danavathri Road.After running through the prominent streets of the city, it spent more than 15 minutes inside Maharani's College and scaled the compound wall damaging vehicles near the Officer's Club. Tranquillisers did not seem to have any effect on the elephant as it proceeded to Sarawathipuram.Forest personnel brought three palace elephants and shifted the wild elephant from Sarawathipuram. Palace elephants Gajendra, Abimanyu, Arjun and Sriram helped trap the female elephant inside Naidu Farm.
