Washington D C Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps has been suspended for three months by the American swimming association.
The ban follows the release of his picture which showed Phelps smoking from a marijuana pipe.
The swimming federation released a statement saying that while Phelps didn't break any anti-doping rules, the intention of the punishment was to send out a strong message.
Phelps has accepted the punishment and conceded that this incident was an error of judgement on his part.
"As well as I can. I'm glad to have the support through times like these. I'm really being able to find out who my true friends and family are. I've clearly made some bad judgments and mistakes in my life and I think the best thing is to learn from your mistakes and its what I've done.
"I'm already back in the pool training and still deciding on a lot of things. I'm happy to be back in the water. I feel at home and feel comfortable,” says the ace.
He won a world record 8 gold medals at the Beijing Olympics and returned home as one of the most celebrated athletes of the country.
