The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has imposed a fine of Rs. 117 crore on realty major Mantri Developers for encroaching land around Bellandur-Agara lakes in Bengaluru for construction work.

Mantri has been directed to restore the three acre encroached lake bed area immediately to the civic authorities. Another builder, Coremind, has been asked to pay a fine of Rs 13.5 crores as compensation.

NGT quashed environment clearances and sanctioned plans of Mantri Techzone and Coremind (Salarpuria company) for their constructions in and around the Bellandur-Agara Lakes.

Any further construction was stayed until fresh or amended environmental clearances were obtained by the builders.

The NGT was hearing the petitions filed by Rajeev Chandrashekhar's Namma Bengaluru Foundation.

The NGT also laid down buffer zones for constructions on all lake side projects. All existing constructions in the city which fall within such buffer zones faces demolition.
