Guwahati: Unidentified gunmen on Tuesday shot dead Anil Majumdar, editor of Aji, a mass circulation Assamese daily, in the heart of Assam's main city of Guwahati.

A police spokesman said 40-year-old Majumdar was fired with automatic weapons from close range outside his residence around 2230 hrs IST.

"Majumdar was returning from office and was about to enter his residence when unidentified gunmen waiting in a car oustide his gate fired at him indiscriminately," senior police official G P Singh said.

"There were about seven bullet injuries in his chest."

Police are clueless about the attack.

"Investigations are on. It would be too early to hazard a guess," Assam government spokesperson and Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The incident has shocked the media fraternity in Assam.

"Majumdar was known for his bold and fearless journalism," Atanu Bhuyan, a senior journalist said.
