It was a ‘home away from home’ for the Nepali community residing in Bangalore  who celebrated their traditional festival ‘Tihar’ (Deepavali) here on Thursday. Giving the celebration an ethnic touch and homely feeling the members sang and danced to the tunes of ‘Deusi’ and ‘Bhailo’, (the historical songs which have only been sung on Tihar days). The event organised by members of Mool Pravah Akhil Bharat Nepali Ekta Samaj. Relating about the history behind its celebration a member of the organising community said,  “Once there was a king who was living his last days of life. His astrologer had told him that a serpent would come and take his life away so he was advised to sleep with lit oil lamps all around his bed and decorate the palace with oil lamps on laxmi puja day. So Goddess Laxmi would talk to the serpent not to take his life. It did happen, the serpent was convinced by goddess Laxmi. Thus the king lived for seventy more years. So onwards Tihar is widely celebrated worshipping Goddess Laxmi.”“The last day of Tihar is ‘Bhai tika’, where sisters pray for their brother’s long life,” he added. Meanwhile, present on the occasion KB Giri and Ramesh Patel, residents of Bangalore gave a clarion call to the people gathered to work in unison for the uplifting of the community. Providing her support for the community Renu Ranka, Chairperson, Akhil Bharatiya Karnataka Manav Sewa Sangh also made her presence. Later, members from Raktim Nepali cultural team, danced to the tunes of various Nepali tunes.
