The 'negative' image of US in the Islamic world has been substantially 'toned down' during the tenure of President Barack Obama, US Special Envoy to the Organisation of Islamic Conference (OIC) Rashad Hussain said on Wednesday.

"President Obama had from the very beginning of his tenure tried to put in place a principled fair policy towards the muslim world because he was holding a very strong vie that for genuine world peace, the genuine concerns of the Muslim world have to be addressed," Hussain said addressing the students at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

"Due to this policy, the negative image of the US in Islamic country has toned down", he added.

Highlighting Obama's foreign policy, he said that it says that the issue of Palestine has to be resolved amicably if peace has to reign in the troubled Middle East.

"A viable and stable Palestinian has to be in place if this problem has to be resolved", he said.

The US envoy said that his President is sparing no efforts in persuading the Israelis and the Arabs that it was in their mutual interest to make some sacrifices for ensuring a lasting peace in that region.

"Despite our sincere efforts it is going to take some time for the mistrust between the US and the Islamic world to be substantively reduced", he said.

The envoy said that though India was "not represented at the OIC, it had a very significant role in the Islamic world because it had the worlds second largest population of Muslims.
