THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: After the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) came into existence, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Thiruvananthapuram Secondary Switching Area (SSA), achieved a rare distinction of the lowest number of customers ported out, when compared to other SSAs in the State. While 10,219 customers ported in, only 2,006 ported out of BSNL. MNP helped BSNL to add 8,213 customers. BSNL general manager S Jyothi Shankar said that in Kerala Circle, the average number of customers ported out was 0.99 per cent and in Thiruvananthapuram, it was only 0.6 per cent. The staff incentive scheme which was introduced four months back was a big hit and it had helped to increase the BSNL customers, Jyothi Shankar added. He pointed out that such a system was first introduced in Thiruvananthapuram in the country, which showed positive results. For each service, which is an initiative of the staff, they are given points, which is added every month and given as incentive.Anil Kumar, Vipin Chandra Nair and Sudarshan Nair were the top scores with 57,640, 57,200 and 48,010 points respectively and a similar amount was paid to them as incentive. There were 269 staff members who scored more than 1,000 points, which helped Thiruvananthapuram BSNL to be on the top of the list in Kerala. In Kerala, 2,45,359 customers ported in to BSNL and 60,298 ported out, giving an advantage of 1,85,061 new connections, which is also the highest in the country.Jyothi Shankar pointed out that even after all the efforts of the BSNL, the number of landline connections was coming down. In the last six months, around 5,500 connections were closed and the same number is expected in the coming months too as mobile service penetration has increased.‘’Steps have been taken to maintain the existing landline connections with more value-added services like broadband. A landline connection can be had for Rs 500, but if the customer buys the phone, Rs 250 is waived and, in addition, an ITC card worth Rs 250 is also given,’’ he said.As part of increasing the customer base, BSNL will provide free installation of broadband connection in the month of December. There are also plans to provide SIM cards free of cost to customers.
