KOCHI: Dj Savyo has been a well-known name in the Kochi night club circuit. A few months back, the talented musician had come up with a CD where he remixed some of Malayalam cinema’s most iconic songs. He was skeptical at that time, knowing how Malayalis worship their films and feel protective about their music. His logic was that Malayalam film music was always too melodious, a bit too sweet and slow to be played at discos. And yet, there was a demand from Malayalis everywhere to listen to these songs. That is when Savyo felt that the best bet would be to retain their melody and nostalgia, but give the songs a contemporary swing and beat. Almost six months later, Savyo is now into something even better. He is remixing a song for an upcoming Hindi film from the Bhatt banner, 'Blood Money', starring Kunal Khemu. Savyo is super-excited about his foray into Bollywood. He’s the first DJ from Kochi to get there. “One of my choreographer friends happened to recommend me to director Vishal S. Mahadkar. He is directing the film for the Bhatts. I sent him links to my music and he liked them. I asked him for the original songs of the film, composed by Jeet Ganguly and then took one number out of them to remix. Vishal was initially not sure if my version would make it to the final CD, but Sony reverted saying that they liked it,” he says.Savyo’s number outshined other remixes in teh album, and as it stands, his song could well be the one that will be used during promotions. So impressed is Vishal with Savyo’s efforts that the director will be holding a press release for the film in Kochi next week at AVA Lounge, where the remixed number will be launched. Savyo will be performing on the day as well.Savyo sees this as an important break. Meanwhile, he says things are on the upswing in Kochi, with the clubbing culture slowly picking up. “On an average I end up DJing for six parties in a week. With time, that number will grow,” he says. For now, the composer who has been into remixing for the last 14 years, says his only mantra with music is to entertain.
