SALEM: Following the serious efforts initiated by Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, the third unit of the Mettur Thermal Plant is all set to function in a few days. It will be a major boost as the unit would generate 600 MW.According to sources at the plant, the third unit, nearing completion, is ready for test runs and in all likelihood will be integrated with the grid from March 29 partially, and fully from April. With this, the plant’s contribution to overall power production in the state would be 1440 MW. Already two units were producing to full capacity of 840 MW.R Joseph, Chief Engineer of the Mettur plant, said that the two units had the highest day-to-day productivity among other thermal power plants in the State. As regards coal shortage, he said the plant has nearly two lakh tonnes of imported and indigenous stock so there was no question of shortage.
