MADURAI: The council meet on Monday witnessed a noisy scene with the opposition benches going hammer and tong against the ruling party citing various scams and corruption that has scuttled the city’s development.P Salaimuthu, the floor leader of the AIADMK, charged that Mayor Thenmozhi had misused her power and was running a shop at Mattuthavani Integrated Bus Stand in the name of her daughter. He flayed the DMK for concentrating on earning money out of the schemes chalked out for the corporation. With speculation rife that Monday’s council meet would be the last one before the local body polls, a series of walkouts were staged by the AIADMK, CPM and DMDK councillors. The AIADMK councillors staged a walkout demanding the resignation of the Mayor, who, they said, had assumed charge in the name of Alagiri.The DMDK councillors also staged a walkout condemning the fact that the last two meetings were conducted in a hasty manner. CPM councillor M Ganesan raked up the issue of drainage water being let into Vaigai river and said that it should be stopped immediately. He also pointed out that the contractors did not pay the contract workers in accordance with the guidelines. On water clogging in Periyar bus stand, he said that though the government had executed various schemes and spent crores of rupees, the issue remained unresolved. Citing these issues, the CPM councillors also staged a walkout.Interestingly, all the councillors who walked out of the meeting hall later joined the meeting and passed some resolutions.On this being the final council meeting, even Thenmozhi was unsure and said that it would depend on the announcement of the date of election as the new council should assume charge on or before October 25, 2011.
