Lisbon: The material girl proved once again that she's the queen of pop. Madonna rocked the Atlantic Pavilion on one of the music industry's most important nights outside the United States.
The 47-year-old stole not only the show, watched by millions at the Portugese capital Lisbon, but also the hearts of her fans at the MTV Europe Music Awards. The fans were clearly still hung up with the artiste.
Madonna enthralled the crowd with the first live televised performance of her new single Hung Up from her latest album Confessions on a Dancefloor. She is hoping the new album puts her back on top of the charts after her last three albums failed to deliver.
"I've been making records for over 20 years. I've had an incredible run, highs and lows, but I keep going," Madonna said.
Pop-punk idols Green Day walked away with the awards for best rock act and best album for American Idiot. Coldplay won the award for the best song for Speed of Sound.
Best Male artiste went to Robbie Williams, beating competition from 50 Cent and Eminem. Virtual band Gorillaz was named Best Group.
The Best Female artiste went to Colombian-born Shakira, who received the largest number of votes.
Best R&B female artiste was won by Alicia Keys, Best Pop group by the Black Eyed Peas, and the Chemical Brothers were awarded best video for Believe.
All the winners were selected by fans from across Europe and Africa, who voted via MTV's website online.
