The Onam celebration in Kumbalangi regained its charm with the active participation of foreign tourists this year. Last year, the celebrations at Kumbalangi, the first tourism village in the country, could not attract many tourists owing to various reasons.
The celebaration at the Kumbalangi Park, held from August 26 to 30, was jointly organised by the Kumbalangi Model Tourism Development Society of the grama panchayat in association with the Ernakulam District Tourism Promotion Council. Apart from the traditional ‘Sadya’, this year, the organisers gave tourists an opportunity to be part of the sadya preparations, which was a novel experience for them.
“More than 50 tourists who were staying at various homestays in Kochi came to Kumbalangi to be part of the celebrations. It was a new experience for all of them and many have promised us that they would be come next year also,” said Kumbalangi Model Tourism Development Society secretary Shaji Kurupassery.
The five-day-long festivities held at Kumbalangi park were marked by musical programmes, tug-of-war, stage performances of the state’s traditional art forms and various other competitions. It is the second time that Kumbalangi is offering such an experience to the tourists.
“Through these kind of celebrations, tourists are being given a chance to feel the flavour of our life and celebrations,” said Shaji.
