Kolkata HC adjourns hearing on Rizwanur case for 5 weeks
Kolkata High Court has turned down CBI's request to proceed further in the Rizwanur case for now.

Kolkata: In the Rizwanur case hearing the High Court has turned down CBI's request to proceed further in the Rizwanur case for now.

The High Court has also adjourned hearing on the Rizwanur Rehman case for five weeks and directed all parties to file affidavits on the issue of making public the CBI report in the case.

The next hearing is on February 20th. The petitioners do not want the report to be disclosed to the respondents before they file affidavits.

The CBI had submitted their final report on the matter on Tuesday. The Central Investigating Agency confirmed that graphics designer Rizwanur Rehman, who had married Priyanka Todi — the daughter of a Kolkata-based industrialist — committed suicide and was not murdered as suspected initially.

The agency also claimed to have found evidence to book the Todi brothers, Ashok and Pradeep, along with Sheikh Mainuddin alias Pappu for abetment of suicide.

The Case So Far

A graphics designer, Rizwanur Rehman had married Priyanka Todi, daughter of industrialist Ashok Todi, under the Special Marriage Act on August 18.

It was alleged that, soon after their marriage, the couple was summoned to Lalbazar police station thrice. Rizwanur was allegedly being harrassed by Priyanka's family and top police officers (close to the Todi family) in the Kolkata Police force to leave Priyanka.

The third time they were summoned to the police station on September 8, Priyanka returned to her father's home, following a written assurance by her uncle that she could return to her in-laws after a week. But she never returned.

A couple of weeks later, Rizwanur's body was found on the railway tracks at Dum Dum on September 21 leading to a public outcry.

In a letter written before his death, Rizwanur had alleged that the police forcibly separated him from his wife and also threatened his family.

The case was transferred to the CBI from the Kolkata Police's jurisdiction after the role of top police officers came under the scanner.

Ashok Todi has been booked by the CBI under Section 302 (murder). The CBI has also grilled top officials of the Kolkata Police including Commissioner of Police, Prasun Mukherjee. Mukherjee was also transferred from Kolkata.
