KOCHI: Uniform clad, with a smile on his face, the tender coconut seller has found a place at the Vytilla Mobility Hub. Five days after the tender coconut water was declared the official drink of the state, a first of its kind tender coconut kiosk was set up at the hub in Vytilla on Friday.Vytilla Mobility Hub Managing Director M Beena who inaugurated the kiosk said, “A coconut kiosk at the hub, where hundreds of bus passengers traverse on a daily basis, will give boost to the sale of the tender coconut water, the official drink of Kerala.” Coconut Development Board Director P K Jose was also present for the inauguration. The kiosk is an initiative of the Coconut Development Board and is intended to increase the livelihood potential of the coconut farmers.A machine which has the ability to key hole into the tender coconut and also cut the coconut into pieces will ease the job of the vendor. This, according to officials, will encourage participation of women. “There are hardly women tender coconut vendors in the state. These machines will encourage them to look at this as a job opportunity. This initiative will also boost the partially disabled to take up this as a business venture,” Beena said.From April 1, a variety of lip smacking coolers made from tender coconut water will hit the stands in the hub. The menu will include thirst quenchers like tender coconut lassi and shakes alongside the chilled tender coconut water. The kiosk will also have ripe coconut at Rs 7.5 for sale. The project is being aided by Maithri, NGO. Depending on the success of the project, the price of the tender coconut will be brought down.
