Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister VS Achuthanandan has stood his ground in the face of tremendous pressure over the demolitions in Munnar.
Despite opposition from within his party and from coalition partners, Achuthanandan said, “It does not matter if the cat is black or white. My men catch even the smallest mice.”
The Chief Minister has sent out a handpicked team to supervise the clean up of the hill town despite pressure from within his party and coalitions partners.
One year into power, the Marxist hardliner might want to keep his crusader image intact but not everyone is happy with his decision.
“If all of us stood together on the decision then the credit would been of a higher dimension,” State President, RSP, Professor C Chandrachoodan said.
The Munnar demolition demonstrates the precision planning that the Chief Minister is capable of and the fact that he knows the pulse of the people, something even his detractors will now not dispute.
“He is trying to prove to his people that whatever he has said as leader of the Opposition in Kerala would not go in vain,” Special Correspondent, The Hindu, C Gowridasan said.
Achuthanandan's moves have got his opponents sharpening their knives especially Kerala CPI(M) Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan's faction. Party sources have also said that the politburo had to interfere to avoid a showdown on the Munnar issue.
“The actions of Achuthanandan as a CM would have a negative fallout on his prospects within the party,” Gowridasan explained.
The Munnar demoltions is a classic case of what a daring Chief Minister and a strong bureaucratic team can do if there is enough political will.
But for Achuthanathan it’s certainly the acid test. He might have won the hearts of the people, but within his own party, it might be an entirely different story.
