Bangalore: A 48-year-old man arrested along with his wife and son by Karnataka Police on charges of murdering his former landlord, has confessed to killing 21 people in Maharashtra and one in Karnataka between 1978-81, police officials said Friday.
Chandrakanth Sharma, his wife Harsha, 43, and son Monto, 21, were arrested on Jan 16 on charges of murdering their former landlord, S V Raghavan, whose half-burnt body was found in Krishnagiri district in neighbouring Tamil Nadu state.
Raghavan's son had lodged a complaint with Kempegowda Nagar police station in south Bangalore on Jan 11 that his father, who went to Sharma to collect rent on Jan 10, had not returned home.
The same day Krishnagiri police informed Bangalore police that they have found a half-burnt body, which was identified as that of Raghavan by his family members.
"Sharma at first pleaded ignorance about the whereabouts of Raghavan but gave in after sustained interrogation," K P Gopalreddy, in-charge of Kemepgowda Nagar police station, said.
"He not only confessed to killing Raghavan with the help of his wife and son, dumping the body in Krishnagiri and trying to burn it, but also revealed that he was involved in 21 murders in Pune, Nashik, Mumbai and other parts of Maharashtra between 1978 and 1981 and one in Karnataka," Reddy said.
Sharma told his interrogators that he moved to Bangalore in 1985 and was into real estate business as well as running a photography shop.
Harsha is a housewife while Montu was assisting his father in the business, Reddy said.
The family has been remanded in police custody till Jan 28, Reddy said.
