KOCHI: After weeks of hectic public campaigning, Friday saw the candidates and activists engaged in silent door-to-door canvassing to ensure that all votes are cast on Saturday. LDF candidate M J Jacob said he used the day to visit his friends and relatives. “The last few hours are important and we are confident of a win,” he said. UDF candidate Anoop Jacob is equally confident. He visited some of the educational institutions in the area and his close friends. The BJP also did not lag behind. Meanwhile, the Election Commission(EC) has made all arrangements for the smooth conduct of the bypoll with an electorate of 1.83 lakh all set to exercise their franchise. The EC has set up 134 polling stations, of which 26 have been identified as sensitive. Of the total electorate, 93,245 are women, 323 service voters and 18 NRI voters. The Piravom bypoll is crucial for both the ruling and the opposition fronts. The UDF hopes to take its tally back to 72 in the Assembly. The LDF, which lost one of its members recently, is looking forward to adding one more seat to keep its tab of 68 in the Assembly. While Anoop Jacob is a novice in politics, M J Jacob is a strong contender, who is a well-known figure in the constituency. BJP’s K R Rajagopal is also not new to politics but the party does not have much influence in the constituency.
