Artist Trupti Dave’s art show, Metaphysical Elegance, which is on display at the Vinnyasa Premier Art Gallery, makes you stop and think about it. For most of us, the works might seem a bizarre mishmash of colours. But if you dig deeper, you will find the answers. Talking to City Express about the title of her current series, Trupti says, “Metaphysical means heights of abstraction. And because my works are based on the energies I receive while or after meditating, it is a little indefinite and untamed. And that’s why it is abstract.”While glancing through her paintings, one figures out that her works have their roots in many of the art movements that began in the 19th and 20th centuries. To begin with, the strident colours and unruly brush strokes show faint signs of Fauvism (an early 20th century art movement). Also, Trupti’s works borrow a few ideas from the Geometric Abstraction and Cubism (both of which are 20th century art movements). However, the cubes, triangles and circles are not in perfect shape. But why? Because they are partially abstract and not complete.Talking about her inspiration, she says, “Like I said earlier, meditation is my source of inspiration. The positive vibes which I receive while or post-meditation, I try and transfer it onto my canvas. My artworks are abstract and in no way figurative.”The series has 52 paintings on display, and each of them has a name. A sizeable chunk of the exhibition has been given over to images that capture the endlessness of the universe, while the rest brings out the power of knowledge and motherhood.  The intense and thick brush/palette strokes add to the intensity of the paintings. Also, the paintings haven’t been bordered and therefore are not restrictive, which helps in extending the imagination of the artist. (The exhibition is on at Vinnyasa Premier Art Gallery till February 20. For details, call 24982515)
