The car of Indian High Commissioner Rajeev Shahare was damaged in the Maldives capital on Monday evening when assailants smashed the windscreen with a rock. The envoy was not in the car at the time.
The car was attacked outside the Indian High Commission. The envoy and staff are safe, according to reports.
Former Maldives president and a top contender in the Indian Ocean nation's presidential polls, Mohamed Nasheed has condemned the attack.
"Condemn vandalism of Indian High Commissioner's car this evening and call on the Government to launch an investigation immediately," Nasheed said in a tweet.
According to reports, two unidentified people riding a motorcycle threw a rock at the car while it was parked in front of the mission at Ameer Ahmed Magu.
Mohamed Jameel Ahmed of the opposition Progressive Party of Maldives said he strongly condemns the "cowardly act of vandalisation on the IHC vehicle today". "MPS should launch full investigation to find the culprits," he posted on twitter.
The fresh dates for the presidential elections in Maldives have been set for Nov 9, after the Sep 7 first round of polling was cancelled.
