Samajwadi Party workers and villagers from, Kadalpur, where razing of a mosque wall led to suspension of SDM Durga Shakti Nagpal, on Saturday took out a rally here demanding permission to build the shrine at the site and justified the action against the official.
The protesters assembled at the Collectorate and gave a memorandum to the Deputy Ccollector demanding permission to construct a mosque on the same site under Gram Samaj land.
They were carrying banners in which they thanked the UP Chief Minister for suspension of Nagpal. Samajwadi Party minority cell district president Hazi Nanka, district panchayat member Momin Tanwar were among those who took part in the rally.
The protesters claimed that the mosque was being constructed with approval of Hindu and Muslim community members residing at village.
Tension gripped the area when the protesters came face to face with another group which was demanding revocation of the SDM's suspension.
However, district and senior police officials intervened and defused the situation.
28-year-old Nagpal, a 2010 batch IAS officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, was suspended on July 27 ostensibly for ordering demolition of wall of a mosque without following the due process.
Her suspension evoked sharp reaction from opposition parties, including BJP and BSP which alleged that she was removed for her action against sand mafia operating in Gautam Budh Nagar area of the state.
