House Committee to keep tab on clubs

The Legislative Assembly on Wednesday decided to set up a House Committee to probe the alleged violation of rules and regulations by various recreational clubs in the state besides to crackdown on the colonial hangover on dress codes imposed by them.

Responding to a question raised by the Congress, A Manju alleged that the clubs registered under the Cooperative Societies Act had been violating the rules by sub-leasing their premises for commercial purposes in contrary to the actual purpose for which they obtained land from the government.

“The government must make it mandatory to get 50 per cent of revenue generated by these clubs,” he said.

Leader o f Opposition in the Assembly Siddaramaiah said, “Is there any rule that one cannot enter the club premises with chappals and panche? When one can go to the Parliament and the Legislature with our desi dress code, why can’t we go to clubs in the same dress?”

Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister S Suresh Kumar narrated an incident when he was almost stopped from entering one of the prestigious clubs in Bangalore. He and Speaker KG Bopaiah advised Cooperation Minister BJ Puttaswamy to constitute a House Committee to look into the issue.

Congress members K Venkatesh and Ashok Pattan also narrated stories on how they were prevented from entering clubs with slippers. Former cooperation minister Laxman Savadi advised Puttaswamy to tighten the laws by bringing in an amendment to control the clubs.

There are 2,315 clubs in the state and the government had given land to 37 of these clubs.

Meanwhile, JD(S) member Suresh Babu suggested to the government that all sitting legislators should be given an ordinary membership to clubs in Bangalore.
