As severe heatwave conditions grip India, the weather department predicted that temperature in Kolkata is likely to cross 40 degrees in the next few days. The heat wave spell is likely to continue over East India till April 23.
Meanwhile, a heat wave alert has also been issued in seven districts of Bengal, which includes Purba and Paschim Medinipur, Jhargram, Bankura, Birbhum and Paschim Bardhaman districts. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said that severe heatwave conditions are likely in Odisha on April 20 and in West Bengal till April 22.
Amidst this scorching heat, Odisha has also reported the season’s first sunstroke death. The deceased, 62-year-old Laxmikanta Sahu from Balasore district, died due to sunstroke on April 15. An official at the Special Relief Commissioner’s office said that this was the first sunstroke death this summer.
West Bengal
The weather office said that the severity of heat in early summer in south Bengal was due to the dry westerly winds at lower levels along with strong solar insolation.
Paschim Bardhaman’s Panagarh district recorded the highest temperature in West Bengal on Friday, at 44 degrees celsius, over seven notches above normal, the MeT department said.
Bardhaman was followed by Medinipur, Suri and Jhargram towns that recorded the day’s maximum temperature at 43.5 degrees Celsius.
Meanwhile, in Kolkata the mercury level went up to 40.8 degrees Celsius.
Odisha
According to a public health director in Odisha, 71 people have been admitted to different hospitals in the state after falling ill due to heatwave. Among them, 35 were from Sundargarh, and seven each from Mayurbhanj and Angul.
The town named Boudh in Odisha was the hottest place in the state at 44.3 degrees Celsius, followed by 44.2 degrees Celsius in the town of Baripada.
Ten other stations registered maximum temperature at or above 43 degrees Celsius, including Jharsuguda (43.8), Angul (43.7), Titlagarh (43.5), Bolangir, Bhawanipatna, Malkangiri and Nayagarh (43).
The capital city, Bhubaneswar recorded the maximum temperature of 41.4 degrees Celsius.
