Jind: Angry over allegations that a teacher at a government school in the Mohammed Kheda area in Jind had tried to defame a girl, locals on Tuesday beat him up in the presence of several policemen. Jagjivan Khedi, a teacher at the primary section of Government Senior Secondary School in the Mohammed Kheda area was beaten up by a group of villagers following allegations that he was trying to defame a girl by linking her name with someone, said district education officer Dilbag Singh Malik.

The incident was the fallout of a fight between Khedi and another primary section teacher Rohtash Jamni on Tuesday, Malik said. Following the fight, Jamni told villagers that Khedi was trying to defame a girl student by linking her name with someone, added Malik. This enraged villagers, who locked up the school gate and started beating Khedi, he said. On learning about the incident, police in Pillukheda here reached the spot and rescued Khedi. But this enraged the villagers further who then dragged Khedi out of a police vehicle and beat him up in front of the policemen, said Malik.

He was later saved by the policemen and kept in a classroom under protection, he said. Rohtash Jamni, meanwhile, escaped from the spot. On learning about the incident, Malik, Saffidon DSP Virendra Singh and the Pillukheda tehsildar reached the spot and placated the villagers. The matter will be probed and legal action will be taken against the guilty, said Mallik. On the complaint of the principal of the school Yashpal, a case has been registered against the two teachers for hooliganism, using foul language and fighting, said Malik. Khedi has been arrested and is being questioned, he added.
