Kolkata: Union Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu on Saturday said functions of the Government Railway Police (GRP) be transferred to his Ministry for seamless policing, which will help in providing greater safety to the passengers.
"I have been seeking that the functions of GRP, which operates presently under the state governments, be given to the Railways," he said in Kolkata.
This, he said, would help the Railways in conducting seamless policing and provide better safety to the passengers.
The GRP, whose 50 per cent of the salary was borne by the Railways, looks after the law and order situation which is a state subject.
"The law should be amended so that this function be shifted to the Railways," the Union Minister said.
The Railway Protection Force (RPF) generally looks after the property of the Railways.
Prabhu asked the RPF to prepare a national database of criminals and also said CCTVs were being installed in larger numbers at stations and inside train coaches.
