The Department of Higher Education on Tuesday issued a fresh notification for admission in degree colleges in the wake of seats remaining vacant even after spot admissions across the State.

With a large number of students opting for job-oriented  professional courses, many degree seats under various streams had remained vacant after the first round of selection on July 16.Against the sanctioned strength of 1,42,150 seats, as many as 40,813 seats in various streams in 671 degree colleges remained vacant after the first round selection. This included 23,566 seats in the Arts stream, 6,206 in Physical Science, 5,467 in Commerce, 4,878 in Biological Science and 696 in self-financing courses. 

As per the new notification, admissions to vacant degree seats will be carried out under three categories  for students who could not apply online during the normal admission period, those who did not get any seat during online admission or selected but could not take admission and for students passing the instant examinations conducted by the CHSE.

As per the schedule, students can download the common application forms from the department’s website and submit it manually in the colleges by August 8. While the merit list of students will be issued by the principals on August 14, the admissions will take place from August 21 to 23.

DHE Secretary Aparajita Sarangi said, “Fresh applications have been invited from students who cleared CHSE’s instant exams. Besides, there are many seats which have remained vacant and several eligible students who could not take admissions for various reasons. We want to give them another chance.”

Meanwhile, spot admissions to vacant degree seats in various colleges was conducted on Tuesday. In Bhubaneswar, while Arts and Commerce seats were filled up in a majority of colleges, Science seats in many colleges remained vacant. Over 30 seats in Physical Science and around 23 seats in Biological Science remained vacant in BJB Autonomous College __ one of premier educational institutions of State __ after spot admission. In Arts and Commerce streams, around five seats each are to be filled up.

In RD Women’s College, of the 32 vacant Physical Science seats, 15 were filled up and 18 students took admission in 33 vacant Biological Science seats.  Likewise, of the 38 vacant seats in the self-financing courses, 19 seats were filled up. However, Principal of the college Sanghamitra Khuntia said several students have in the meanwhile taken transfer certificates (TCs).  At Basic Science & Humanities College, of the 224 vacant seats, 171 seats were filled up in spot admission.
