In Pics: Love kills! When honour breeds hatred

Her son may be no more. But for Neelam Katara, Wednesday, May 28, will be a day forever etched in the annals of her memory with the Patiala High Court pronouncing a guilty verdict on her son’s killers, Vikas and Vishal Yadav.

A mother who sat and cried silent tears for six long years as she saw her son’s killers roam scot-free. A mother who only hoped that the girl who loved her son, (fearlessly at one point), would muster the courage to say so to the world when it needed that admission from the twenty-something the most.

A mother who ran from pillar to post praying that her son’s killers be brought to book and ensured that justice is meted out.

A woman who, despite waiting for justice for her own, didn’t shy away from being there for other justice-deprived and aggrieved souls like Sabrina Lall and Chaman Lal Mattoo. For, like Neelam Katara, both Sabrina and Mattoo had shown the courage to take on an entire system and process that for the greater part eluded justice.

And today, the feeling of relief and the gratitude towards life’s small mercies is a thin, yet persistent thread that binds the three of them together.

After doggedly chasing the system for six long years, this is a moment of truth for Neelam Katara. It is also a point of awakening for many for whom the dying faith in Indian judiciary is a reality.

It has also brought us to terms with the fact that six years on, a guilty verdict may be little appeasement for a woman coping with grief.

And yet, somewhere, this relentless fight has proved that justice delayed is NOT justice denied.
