Not just people, now even dogs bring laurels to the city. And how? Well, Chinky, a street dog, who was adopted by Alokparna Sengupta was voted as the first-place winner of PETA India’s First-Ever Cutest Indian Dog Alive contest. Chinky edged out hundreds of other lovable community dogs to become a finalist and also beat out nine finalists to be crowned the winner.
Alokparna rescued Chinky last winter in New Delhi. Chinky was ill and suffering from a gaping wound on her back. Alokparna took her to the veterinarian, and now Chinky is doing well.
PETA created the contest to create awareness about adopting an Indian dog from the streets or animal shelters, rather than buying puppies sold in pet stores. Pedigree dogs are bred for certain exaggerated physical traits, such as long ears or drooping backs which leads to breathing problems, heart disease, bleeding disorders, skeletal malformation and eye problems in many pets. Indian community dogs are healthier and more robust than their purebred cousins.
“Chinky proves that adopting a dog from the streets or an animal shelter can fill your life with joy and love,” says PETA India campaign coordinator Chani Singh.
