New Delhi: Google has started to roll out the latest version of its mobile operating system, Android 5.0 Lollipop, for Nexus devices including the Nexus 4,5,7 and 10. The company has confirmed the availability of Android Lollipop for Nexus devices in a tweet sent out from its Android handle that reads: "#AndroidLollipop rollout has started and will soon be available on most #Nexus devices. Dessert is served." The next-generation Android OS will be rolled out to users over-the-air.
Android Lollipop seems to be the last update for the Nexus 4 if we go by Google's past, where it made only two subsequent versions of the Android OS available for a Nexus device. Motorola also has plans to release the Android 5.0 Lollipop update for Moto X (1st and 2nd Gen), Moto G (2nd Gen) and Moto E once the update is officially released.
LG last week also announced that it would be rolling out the Android Lollipop upgrade for G3 smartphones starting in Poland this week, to be followed by other key markets in the near future.
Android Lollipop is also expected to soon arrive on the first of the Android One phones - Micromax Canvas A1, Karbonn Sparkle V, Spice Dream Uno. One of the USPs of the Android One phones was that they are assured on updates to the newer versions of the Android operating system.
Google has named the new Android software "Lollipop (Android 5.0)" in keeping with its tradition of naming the Android upgrades after treats.
Android Lollipop "is built for the multi-screen world" and would also give developers the ability create apps for screens of all sizes - from a small smartwhatch to a large television.
The new software "is designed to be flexible, to work on all your devices and to be customised for you the way you see fit," said Google vice president Sundar Pichai, who heads the Android operations. The songs, photos, apps, and even recent searches from one of your Android devices can be immediately enjoyed across all of your Android devices.
