CHENNAI: Responding to the suggestions of various political parties that the safety measures should be tightened in all cracker manufacturing units to avoid recurrence of fire accidents, Labour Minister S T Chellapandian on Wednesday told the State Assembly that an experts’ committee would be formed to prevent mishaps in cracker units.Besides, the government had already directed the authorities to inspect these units very often to ensure compliance with safety measures. The government was also considering imparting training on safety measures and forming a committee of experts. At present, a special committee to study issue has been formed.The Minister was replying to the discussion on a special mention about the death of 10 workers in a cracker unit at Kariyamkurichi in Sivakasi district last week. The Minister said Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa had announced a solatium of `1 lakh each to the families of the victims and suitable financial assistance to those suffered injuries. In the past, the management concerned used to extend only `2 lakh as solatium. Now, with the intervention of the CM, the management of the cracker unit had paid `4 lakh each to the families.
